About Us

Who are we?

Headway Salisbury and South Wiltshire’s mission is to ensure that when a person’s life is turned upside down by brain injury, they get the help, support and guidance they need and deserve. With this in mind our aims include:

  • working with service users, carers and families to identify goals that will enable our service users to progress on their individual rehabilitation journey;
  • to provide the support necessary to ensure those goals can be achieved;
  • to ensure that these goals both complement formal rehabilitation provided by healthcare professionals and assist in building independence within the local community;
  • to deliver individually tailored services which, at the same time, supports the carers and families;
  • to raise awareness of the range and duration of the needs of people with brain injuries and to increase public and professional awareness of the presence and activities of Headway Salisbury and South Wiltshire; and at the same time participate in activities that will help to reduce the incidence of brain injury; and
  • to promote improved communication with and between other organisations or agencies involved in the assessment, rehabilitation and community re-entry, of those with brain injuries.

Who can access our services?

Headway Salisbury and South Wiltshire is one of over a hundred autonomous groups across the UK providing long-term support to brain injured adults, their families and carers. Affiliated to Headway UK, we are a registered charity run by a dedicated team of professionals, relatives and volunteers.

Our services are available to adults over 18 years, with a confirmed diagnosis of a brain injury.

Brain injury has many causes but some of the most common are head injury, stroke, brain tumour, and illnesses like meningitis.

Some adults who are unable to mobilise independently and cannot weight-bear, or those with high personal care needs will need to be supported by their own support worker.

Services

We are currently based at the Salisbury Medical Centre on Wilton Road, Salisbury, which is located just outside the city centre.

As part of our service provision, we aim to encourage socialisation and peer support to enable services users, carers and their families to share their experiences in an environment of understanding, with an emphasis on fun and at a pace to suitable for all.

Structured and individually tailored programs enable our services users to access any of our services and therapies, which may include:

  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Art and music Therapy
  • Occupational Advice
  • Socials and meet-ups
  • Games and Quizzes

Headway Salisbury and South Wiltshire also offers support and information to carers and families of those with an acquired brain injury, from early diagnosis and throughout the various stages of rehabilitation. In addition to the variety of practical services on offer we also help to facilitate peer support groups and breaks for carers from the everyday responsibility of their caring role.

Over the years, we have developed a close and wide-spread group of service users, ex-service users, carers and supporters. As is often the case, sharing the same experiences and hardships can bring the benefit of mutual support.

Of course dealing with brain injury is, to some, an intensely private and personal matter and we are respectful of such views. However, for those who wish, Headway Salisbury and South Wiltshire can provide an empathetic and supportive community.

“We know he is fully supported and staff are there to talk through pressing issues and offer advice as to how we might resolve them. The groups are vital to our well-being of us both and help us to feel less isolated because of the accident.”
